Monkshood
Monkshood (Aconitum napellus) is a herbaceous perennial flower so named because its flowers resemble the cowls of a monk's habit. It features fascinating, hood-shaped indigo blue flowers with tiny, shiny black centers tightly arranged on straight green stalks. Other common names include Helmet Flower, Wolf's Bane, Blue Rocket, and Wolf's Bane.
AVAILABILITY: Late summer through early fall
CARE & HANDLING: While monkshood has been safely cultivated for hundreds of years, it does contain several poisonous compounds. Wear gloves when handling and wash hands thoroughly afterwards.
